CEO, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina
Kay joined Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina as CEO in January of 2004. Second Harvest is responsible for providing food to almost 650 non-profit agencies serving the hungry in a 19 county region of North and South Carolina. These agencies include emergency pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, low income daycares, group homes and senior programs.
In the ten years since Kay joined the Food Bank, the total pounds distributed have increased from 7 million pounds annually to over 45 million pounds annually. One of the major goals of Second Harvest is to eliminate childhood hunger in the Metrolina Region. In the past 8 years, hunger programs devoted to serving children have increased by 722%.
Another primary goal of the Food Bank is to distribute as much nutritious food as possible including, fresh produce, meat and dairy. Pounds in the categories, which people living in poverty can least afford, but need to stay healthy have increased by 340% since Kay became CEO. Second Harvest is one of the most efficient Food Banks in the nation, largely due to our large volume of volunteers. Since 2004, hours donated by volunteers have increased by over 800% with over 133,000 hours donated this past fiscal year.
