Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina Calls on The Public to Join Together in Ending Hunger
September is Hunger Action Month and during the month-long campaign, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina will be raising awareness and inspiring action in the 24 counties we serve (14 in NC and 10 in SC). Every action counts, whether it's donating, advocating, volunteering or spreading the word online.
Food insecurity in America has reached its highest rate in over a decade, reaching over 47.9 million people facing hunger, including almost 14 million children. In fiscal year 2025-2026, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina distributed almost 94 million pounds of food and household items, with over 63 million being foods high in nutritional value including fresh produce, meat, and dairy. This was a record setting year in food distributed as the need is great. 12.2% of our service area population, almost 493,000 people, live in poverty including over 153,300 children and 73,000 seniors. Our emergency pantries, soup kitchens, and homeless shelters continue to report significant increases in requests for assistance - many who are individuals that have never needed help.
How To Get Involved
During Hunger Action Month, we are kicking off our annual SPREAD THE LOVE Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive - these items are two of the most requested by our agency partners as they are high in protein and disappear off of pantry shelves quickly, click here for more information.
