Publix, Publix Super Markets Charities, and Carrier Transicold Donate to Second Harvest Food Bank
(Charlotte, NC) – January 11, 2019 – Since expanding into the Charlotte Market Publix has become one of the Food Bank’s largest food donors as well as a major financial partner. Publix is a key partner in the work that Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina is doing to hunger in the Metrolina region. One of the most important contributions from Publix have been grant funds that since 2014 have helped purchase three trucks and a van. Trucks are one of the most vital needs at SHFBM and Publix in late 2018 donated $150,000 to help SHFBM secure another truck that will help the organization distribute over 54 million pounds of food annually.
In addition, Carrier Transicold awarded a grant to add refrigeration to the vehicle, which allows the Food Bank to transport items in need of cold storage from the food bank to the over 700+ agencies that the Food Bank serves. These grants were a part of a $5 million donation to more than 240 nonprofit organizations, including Feeding America® member food banks, who are focused on alleviating hunger across Publix’s operating area. The donation will provide funding to assist these nonprofit organizations in the nourishment of children, seniors and families in need. Over the past four years, Publix Super Market Charities has contributed more than $17 million to hunger-related programs.

As part of Feeding America, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina serves 19 counties in North and South Carolina. In FY2017-2018, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina distributed over 54 million pounds of food and household items to over 700 hunger feeding agencies including emergency pantries, soup kitchens, senior programs, shelters and low-income daycares.
