Host A Summer Food/Fund Drive

Because Hunger Doesn't Take A Vacation...

And neither does Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. At the very foundation of our mission is our ongoing work of ending child hunger. Soon, schools across the Metrolina region will close for the summer – which means that breakfasts and lunches simply disappear for thousands of kids. That means empty bellies and unhappy summers – unless we help. You see, thousands of our most vulnerable children rely on the free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch program at school. Once schools are out, their families have to find a way to provide two more meals each day.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina sees an increased demand during the summer months when kids are out of school and during this same period of increased demand, donations are often at their lowest as many people are focused on summer activities. To help during this time of critical need, we encourage individuals, businesses and organizations of all shapes and sizes to organize creative and fun food and fund drives to help.

Here are some fun ways that you can help us feed children in need during the summer months:

Host a Summer Food/Fund Drive

  • Are you having cookouts or parties during the summer months? Have a special fundraiser and ask folks to donate funds to help.

  • BBQ Fund Drive: Grilling is a staple summer time activity, so why not grill and give (give back that is)? Host a BBQ and ask everyone to donate funds – for every dollar donated, the Food Bank can purchase 7 pounds of food – and monetary donations go the furthest for us.

  • Work Outings Fund Drive: Does your company hold an annual summer outing? How about getting your team members to fundraise with different contests, etc. leading up to the event and hold an awards ceremony at your outing?

  • Host a Shark Week Food/Fund Drive: For many, binge-watching the Discovery Channel’s annual “Shark Week” in July is a staple of summertime. Take advantage of this popular event by holding a canned tuna drive. Tuna is one of the most-highly requested items by food banks because of its high protein.

Note: please plan to deliver your collection to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina if your drive is less than 3 barrels.

Become a Monthly Donor

  • As a SHMETROLINA Monthly Donor, you’ll ensure that the Food Bank can be there for our neighbors struggling with hunger every day of the year. And now that summer is just around the corner and the need is only growing, there is no better time to start your monthly gift.

If you’re unable to host a Summer Food / Fund Drive, please consider spending time with us as a volunteer. There are so many opportunities and we make it as easy as 1.2.3. to sign-up and start volunteering. Learn more here.

Thanks to you, we are here, working year round to fill the gaps and the tummies of hungry children in our 19 county service region.
