AXA volunteers at Second Harvest Food Bank for Day of Service and bestows grant that will provide 28,000 meals to those in need

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA – AXA’s operations center recently volunteered its services at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina (SHFBM) in Charlotte.

Second Harvest strives through education, advocacy and partnerships to eliminate hunger by the solicitation and distribution of food. They provide a regional distribution warehouse and branches that supply food and grocery items to charitable agencies that assist people in need. The organization serves a total of 19 counties - 14 counties in North Carolina, including Anson, Burke, Cabarrus, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Rowan, Rutherford, Stanly and Union, in addition to 5 counties in South Carolina, including Cherokee, Lancaster, Spartanburg, Union and York.

More than 30 employees from AXA and their family members were on hand to help inspect and sort food and non-food products that will get distributed to the more than 700 nonprofit agencies Second Harvest supports. The volunteer group organized more than 10 pallets of donations that had been recently received.

The AXA Foundation made a grant of $6,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. Since each dollar SHFBM receives is the equivalent of 7 pounds of food, the $6,000 will provide the equivalent of 42,000 pounds of food, which will provide 28,000 individual meals for neighbors in need!

“At AXA, we are committed to volunteerism and getting involved in our local communities,” said Henry Lewer, Sr. Director of Life Inforce Operations at AXA’s Charlotte office. “Being active and giving back to the communities we serve strengthens our relationships.”

Every year, thousands of AXA people nationwide join together to participate in AXA Day of Service volunteer projects benefiting their local communities. Adding to this “sweat equity,” the AXA Foundation – the philanthropic arm of AXA – awards grants to the charitable organizations where the volunteer events take place.
